However, in order to participate in the Everest of sailing, Bernard Stamm is doubtless the skipper who has moved the most mountains. In this respect, he pulled off one his most crazy challenges: to build his own boat before finding financial partners. This particular Vendée Globe project began in 1996: Bernard had just completed a great Mini season at the helm of a boat he built himself in Lesconil in Southern Finistère. Back in the Bigouden area, which has been his home on shore since leaving the banks of Lake Geneva, the desire to participate in this single-handed round the world came to mind quite logically. With a profound love of the ocean, this former lumberjack turned professional skipper, wanted to do the Vendée Globe at all costs. He formed the Cap Aventure association and focused on the task in hand. In the Bigouden port, a hangar was built and in time saw the creation of a 60 foot yacht. After seven years of good and loyal service and a host of victories including a solo round the world with stopovers, Bernard Stamm is trading in his steed for Jean-Pierre Dick’s former monohull and a whole new adventure…
